TikTok faces US ban as bill set to be signed by Biden

The US Senate has adopted legislation that might lead to TikTok's prohibition in the United States because to national security concerns.

It gives ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese owner, nine months to sell its interest before the app is barred in the United States.

TikTok informed the BBC that it did not have a quick comment to the move. Previously, Bytedance stated that it would reject any attempts to force it to sell TikTok.

"It's a big deal," Doug Calidas, a tech expert at Harvard's Belfer Center, told the BBC.

"In the period of a few weeks they managed to pass a law through both chambers which very rarely happens - to see them act so quickly on a matter of public concern."

If the US is successful in forcing ByteDance to sell TikTok, any agreement would still require permission from Chinese officials, and China has promised to veto any such move.
